The Scrappy Face Guide to Starting a Business Featured in Power Culture Magazine

I am excited to announce that our leading lady, Kate Walling, has an article featured in the May/June 2012 edition of Power Culture, a magazine for the ambitious, tech-savvy, female entrepreneur published by the Women CEO Project.

Her piece is titled, “Start a business…the Scrappy way!” and it is about a topic that she’s built an entire business around – helping entrepreneurs and small businesses start. Here is an excerpt:

Starting a business is overwhelming. It usually starts with a passion and the desire to be your own boss. And once you decide to take on your own challenge, your mind will not rest and you will not be happy until you know how to move forward.

But how do you move forward when you have limited resources?

Do you have a day job? You can do it. What if you only have $100

to start? That’s okay. But to do it…you will have to be scrappy!

If you have limited resources to start a business, you need to stay focused. Entrepreneurs often make the mistake of thinking too big too early. Never forget that the purpose of having a business is to make money and there is no such thing as an overnight success. Make sure this is your primary focus at all times.

What do you think is the number one thing to work on when building a scrappy business?

I had less than $100 when I started my business.  In fact, my unemployment ran out suddenly, and I had absolutely no income.  The number one thing that I focused on was the health and wealth of my business.  With less than $100 and unpaid bills, I had to become obsessed.  I learned everything I could about marketing, operations, sales and technology so that I could do it myself.  Now I’m currently building a team and outsourcing.

To be scrappy means to be resourceful.  If I ever think that I need money to start a business, than I’m thinking inside the box.  And I HATE boxes. =)

Keep doin what you do Kate!

Thanks so much, Kat, we love hearing your story. You are so right, thinking outside of the box is all about being scrappy and it sounds like you’ve mastered it.

    Cheers to Staying Scrappy!
